Water Wood Chubby Chick

Our consistent obsession here at Water Wood Custom Baits is to build tools that make even the most accomplished tournament anglers more effective on the water. We’re huge fans of the many esteemed crankbaits that came before us, but we continually endeavor to minimize or eliminate their limitations.

For example, many if not most of the premier wooden flat-side crankbaits had castability issues – they were light and threw like a soggy potato chip. That wasn’t a huge problem in the days of uneducated bass, but with increased fishing pressure it has become a hindrance. Time and again we see the fish scatter on forward-facing sonar when the boat approaches, a lure hits the water and then passes through them. Precise, longer casts have become a must, and those legacy lures just aren’t up to the task, especially in windy conditions.

These concerns led us to work on the development of crankbaits which retain the best characteristics of those lures, but without the disabilities. We believe we’ve hit paydirt with a “hybrid bait,” one with a small profile body and semi flat sides but a heavier makeup. It’s still a finesse concept, but in a more castable package.

We’re starting off with the Chubby Chick, a heavier version of our proven and popular Cute Pig. It has the same thump and vibration as its predecessor, creating the same hydrostatic signature of an original flat side bait. However, you can still cast it a mile in windy conditions using a baitcaster.

Soon we’ll add more lures to this series. Next up will be the Musashi, a “hybrid” rendition of the Baby Bushido. It has Japanese styling, and I can tell you that during extensive testing it’s already wearing out the spotted bass on lakes like Norman and Hartwell.
